What is a dental crown?

A dental crown is a restoration that covers, or “caps,” a tooth to restore it to its normal shape, size and function. Dental crowns are necessary when a tooth has generally broken down and the issue cannot be solved with fillings. If a tooth is cracked, a crown holds the tooth together to seal the crack and prevent further damage.

Crowns are also used to restore a tooth when there isn’t enough of the tooth remaining to provide support for a large filling, attach a bridge, protect weak teeth from fracturing, restore fractured teeth or cover badly shaped or discoloured teeth.

The most common function of a dental crown is to decrease the chance of a tooth fracturing, especially if it has had previous decay or has had root canal treatment.

What is a dental bridge?

The purpose of a bridge is to replace one or more missing teeth and look and function naturally. It is permanently anchored to the teeth on either side of the space created by the missing teeth. When a lost tooth is replaced with bridgework, the teeth on either side are prepared as crowns to serve as anchors for the bridge.
